Educational Packages
The Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation (IDDF) and resident dance
company, Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Company, strive to develop, promote and
deliver educational programs, company performances and ongoing
classes and workshops reflecting the passion, ideals and artistic
integrity of our namesake, Isadora Duncan, the “Mother of Modern
Dance”. We are currently involved in several successful outreach
activities that can be combined with any of the Performance Packages.

Master Classes
The Isadora Duncan Dance Company offers master classes in the Duncan technique
worldwide. The classes are geared for modern and ballet dancers, as
well as theater students. The classes run between 90 minutes and 2
hours and give dancers a kinesthetic knowledge of the training
demands, standards, and aesthetic that Isadora established for all her
students. Classes include floor, barre, center, and movement
combinations from the original technique of Isadora Duncan's
European, American, and Russian schools. For advanced levels, phrases
from Isadora's dances are taught, further illustrating the truly modern
aspect of the style and technique.
Workshops
Comprehensive Workshops are tailored to the needs of each group
(dance experience can vary) and classes range from 1 to 2 hours. The
dancers explore, through movement, basic themes and principles found
in the repertory of Isadora Duncan. Workshops include a technique
class, Duncan repertory, screening of rare videos, improvisation,
partnering and discussion.
Residencies
A one-week residency typically includes one public performance, a screening of Isadora Duncan: Movement from the Soul, two lecture-demonstrations at different
locations, series of five classes for one consistent group, setting of one
dance from the repertory on a performing ensemble, and a special event to meet
the artist(s). A package of offerings can be tailored to meet the needs of
your community. Every company dancer has taught extensively on the faculty
of the Duncan Foundation and can offer dance classes at all levels.
Repertory
The Isadora Duncan Dance Company is available to teach and coach repertory for
companies and performing ensembles. Packages include solo and/or group
repertory with
master tapes, lighting notes, and costume designs.
Education K-12
IDDF's educational K-12 program is a way to extend the inspiring life and
joyous dance of Duncan to children. “I'M HIP” (Isadora's Mulitcultural & Historical
Interdisciplinary Program) has been developed as a pilot interdisciplinary
educational program introducing the beauty and physicality of dance in a
historical context that at once motivates courageous self expression and
encourages cultural and ethnic exchanges among school children K-12. Students
are coached in Duncan's timeless technique, drawing upon the body's organic
physicality to find an aesthetic expression conveying both emotions and viewpoints
in addition to personal and historical perspectives.
Teacher Training Seminars
The Isadora Duncan Dance Company can take educators from various disciplines, and
for a wide range of students, through the basic technique and repertory of Duncan
work. Part of the training typically includes hands-on experience with students,
as a laboratory class to apply the techniques. For more information, see Intensive
Workshops and School & Certification.
Arts & Sciences
We offer two performances geared toward exploration of the sciences through
the arts:
Albert and
Isadora was created in collaboration with Sidney Perkowitz,
Candler Professor of Physics at Emory University, and explores the
creative spirits of Isadora Duncan and Albert Einstein, paradigms
of different fields who exemplify a unique turn-of-the century time
that fostered revolutions in both art and science. The 20 minute
to 1/2 hour program illustrates the art of Duncan's dance and the
concepts of Einstein's science. Both creators describe space and
time, drawing on “body knowledge,” the visceral sense
of one's physical place, essential for dancers like Duncan, and
equally essential for Einstein as he pictured himself surfing on
a light
wave. Further connections between these icons of the early 20th
Century and their work emerge with Belilove, as Isadora, and Perkowitz,
as
Einstein, interacting with each other and with the audience, whose
participation is encouraged. First performances were part of the
Art and Science Symposium held at the CUNY Graduate Center in tandem
with the Einstein exhibition at the American Museum of Natural
History, New York. Choreography is by Lori Belilove in collaboration
with
the Company.
Fantasy on
the Double Helix is a new choreography by Lori Belilove,
with music by Bobby McFerrin and Todd Barton. This project was
inspired by research and contemplation of the ramifications of
human understanding
of DNA, RNA and the genome. The 25-minute work was commissioned
by physics professor Brian Schwartz of CUNY Graduate Center and
director
of Art and Science Collaborations, Inc, for performances celebrating
the 50th Anniversary of the Human Genome Project.
The Healing Arts
The Healing Arts is an interactive Mind/Body/Spirit program incorporating the healthful
benefits of the Duncan dance technique by focusing on how the Duncan work
engages the body's natural rhythms through breath and flowing movement. Duncan
Dancing has healing properties because the dancers themselves undergo a transformation
as they move with an extra-ordinary passion that is contagious to audiences.
This shared experience is cathartic for both the participants and the viewers.
Moving to the cadences of beautiful classical music is a genuine artistic
experience that increases vitality, which, in turn, promotes healing, reduces
stress and instills hope. In a typical program, the Company performs several
Duncan dances reflecting the passion, ideals and artistic integrity of Isadora
Duncan. The performances are interspersed with themes behind the dances,
including Greek myths and Isadora's own writings about them. After the presentation,
the dancers will partner with the participants and engage everyone in the
Duncan technique for a special experience dancing while seated or standing
using visualizations and breathe.
