Born Maria-Theresa Kruger, Maria-Theresa Duncan enrolled at Isadora Duncan’s school in Grunewald, Germany in 1905, becoming an integral member of Isadora’s troupe The Isadorables.

Famous for startling and remarkable photographs taken of her at the foot of the Acropolis by Edward Steichen, Maria-Theresa was the first Duncan dancer within Duncan’s troupe to become an independent soloist performing 1922 in Carnegie Hall. Multitalented as an artist and teacher, she created many of her own choreographies and founded her own dance company, Heliconiade. She was considered by Carl Sandberg to be a “ living reincarnation of a Greek nymph.” For this month’s Dance Historian Is In, Lori Belilove, artistic director of the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation and Company outlines Maria-Theresa Duncan’s extraordinary life within the legacy of Isadora Duncan.

For more than ten years, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division's extensive collection, through which he unearthed many treasures, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. Today, we honor his memory and work by inviting dance historians from all over the world each month to carry on the tradition of highlighting dance history through the Dance Division's moving image collection.

This event will take place online via Zoom. A streaming link will be emailed to everyone on the morning of the event. Click here to REGISTER!
